This is one of a few Smiths songs that never made it to an album or compilation. Since the lyrics are about the realization and acceptance of a failed relationship, I wanted to give it a bittersweet quality as if the love is there, it's just all mixed up in emotions. Who knows, acknowledging a failure can lead to new beginnings... so actually, maybe this song can be seen as a positive thing?

I'm headed to LA tomorrow for the Sweet and Tender Hooligans "Unhappy Birthday" concerts and I hope to see you there. I'll put some pictures on the blog and see if anyone can take videos of my performances.

Plus, I am in musical cahoots with some awesome people in LA so there will be exciting surprises on this blog in the next few weeks!

Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want

Album 2: Hatful of Hollow
Track 16: Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want

This is the last track on Hatful of Hollow before we move on to Meat is Murder. Two albums down! (Only 50-ish songs to go- is that all?) This is one of my favorite songs and I'm not sure what possessed me to put vocoder on it but it just seemed like the right thing to do. It seemed like it would fit nicely. You be the judge.

Ever since Jose Maldonado of The Sweet and Tender Hooligans asked me to join them at Morrissey's Unhappy Birthday concerts, I have taken a break the last few weeks to prepare for my first live performances with this music. I will be doing "live looping" which basically means I start by recording one voice, then add layer upon layer to it to create the "instrumental" for me to sing over. I have a 4 track looper which gives me the ability to be simultaneously recording, mixing, and performing. Figuring out what to sing, when, and on what track, is a lot like a 3D game of chess. I'm excited to play my arrangements for everyone and I hope to see you all there!

Back To The Old House

Album 2: Hatful of Hollow
Track 14: Back To The Old House

After high school, I started spending a lot of time with a guy who I'd been friends with for a long time. We became inseparable- we held each other tight. We had a really sweet and innocent, yet unspoken understanding of our affection. We watched movies all day, listened to music constantly, drove to far off places, etc. I always laughed when he tried to sing like Morrissey. At some point my brain goes fuzzy and I don't quite remember why we stopped hanging out so much. Maybe we both got jobs or something... who knows. One day I was really missing him so I went over to the apartment where he lived with his mom. Some strange woman came to the door and when I asked about him, she didn't know who he was. I walked back to my car stunned. He was gone and I never even told him how much I really liked him.

Picture of my SF apartment of 12+ years before we tore down the "extra wall" we built to make it a 3 bedroom. Next to the heart is a list of every roommate that lived with me in that apartment. Ah, San Francisco living...
